On Awards and Recognition

There haven’t been any medals for the past ten-plus years; no outstanding scores in mathematics or science; no quiz and spelling bees won. And I’m almost sure there wouldn’t be latin honors in the future; probably not even a high school diploma.

This year, Jared got the “Happy Helper” and the “Budding Scientist” award. Ate Sam got the “Task Champ” and the “Self Care Star” award.

Some might say that all we ever get are consolation prizes. And they are probably right too. But hey, that’s okay.

We would rather have our kids get the Kindness Award over Best in Algebra on any given day. It would make us the proudest if they get a Happiness Award.

And one day, when a 38-year old Sam receives an “Alive and Breathing Award”, still at pre-school, we would be there beside her to accept it, while holding back our senior tears.

Yes, we are very well aware of the probability that we will still be attending the same exact recognition days twenty years from now. But whether that is a sad and bitter reality or a rare and beautiful gift from the universe is entirely up to perspective.

Congratulations Samantha and Jared!
